INTERNAL MEDICINE:  is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases (Wikipedia). Internists are equipped to deal with whatever problem a patient brings -- no matter how common or rare, or how simple or complex. They are specially trained to solve puzzling diagnostic problems and can handle severe chronic illnesses and situations where several different illnesses may strike at the same time. They also bring to patients an understanding of wellness (disease prevention and the promotion of health), women's health, substance abuse, mental health, as well as effective treatment of common problems of the eyes, ears, skin, nervous system and reproductive organs (American College of Physicians) link: http://www.acponline.org/patients_families/about_internal_medicine/

herbs and medicinal foods have been used by many cultures (including American culture) for generations, and there is a wealth of information that these traditions keep. It is a challenge for the modern-day physician to discover and utilize this knowledge to help his or her patients today. There has been a great body of research done on herbal as well as ortho-molecular supplementation, and this body of  research grows, as does the public's  interest in alternative medicine
